I may have been scared witless when I first realized I was gonna have to write and deliver an important speech for my best friend. But I was even more terrified when somebody told me the best man has a lot more to do than just give the best man wedding toast speech.

I found out the responsibilities of a best man are pretty serious. Basically, you’re a point person for organizing both the wedding and the reception. You have to take care of the groom, keep him out of trouble and looking his best. Essentially, the job of making sure the whole day runs like clockwork is on your shoulders.

Of course I had to do it because it meant so much to my buddy and his wife-to-be. Anybody who knows me realizes I’m not exactly the life of the party kind of guy. I’m happy sitting in the corner. And I sure don’t give a lot of bestman speaches. So could I ever come up with witty, original and sensitive things to say to a huge room full of people?

Just as important, how would I be able to deliver the speech and toast without being too nervous?

Do you want to know what I decided not to do? I didn’t re-invent the wheel. Instead I found somebody who has already been through the best man routine and got his expert advice. The guy’s name is Dan Stevens, and he’s a professional speech writer.

In a nutshell, I picked up a copy of Dan’s book. Do you want to know what’s in it? For starters, I found out some outstanding ideas for throwing the bachelor party my best friends are never gonna forget. And I mean that in the good way!

I got plenty of examples of sample toasts. Serious ones and funny ones.

The real kicker was an audio track to download with a professional hypnotist that literally hypnotizes you so you won’t get the jitters. It sure worked wonders for me.

Could I have pulled it off without professional help? Possibly. But I really was confident on the day that Marv and Millie’s wedding was going to be perfect. And if I could help them make their dream wedding come true, then I wanted it to be as good as possible.

Do you want to see some examples of powerfully good best man wedding speeches? If you are like me, it will help you write your toast to the bride and groom if you see some good examples of wedding speeches that other best man guys have written. So that is what I would like to do for you right now.

But do you want to know a secret about delivering a speech at the wedding reception? What you say does not make as much difference as the way in which you say it. It’s all about the delivery. If you feel nervous and do not have very much self confidence, then the best written speech will probably just fall flat. And on the other hand, if when the other wedding guests look towards you, what they see is a man who is overflowing with confidence, they will most likely be entertained by whatever you may have to say.

One of the best ways to not feel nervous is to be totally familiar with your speech. You may not have to memorize it word for word, but if you have rehearsed it very well from some notes then you will not be worried, your appearance will be strong, and the guests at the wedding will have an enjoyable and memorable moment.

There is an excellent resource that I found that not only helped me get over the jitters about giving the best man speech, but also was an enormous help in walking me through all of the other duties that are the responsibilities of a best man from before the wedding ceremony itself until after the bride and groom have driven away to their honeymoon.

The thing that really helped me a lot was a whole Best Man Info package put together by a guy named Dan Stevens. I will give you more details about that next time. But in the meantime, if you want to know more about Dan and what he did for me, check this out…

Writing The Best Man Speech Everyone at the Wedding Will Love

Even if you are not going to be writing a funny best man speech I recommend that you at least include some humor if not a joke or two in any speeches you write. Let me share with you some of the reasoning behind why I would say such a thing. Have you ever gone to church and heard the priest or pastor tell a little joke in the middle of his sermon? It seemed really hilarious, didn’t it. Probably a lot less funny than it really was, except for the fact that the guy saying it was up there being religious and serious most of the time. So anything that he says that makes you even crack a smile will be appreciated. And I think it’s not too different when it comes to weddings.

The speech the best man gives about the groom and bride will not be delivered in the church, of course. Unless the wedding reception is in the church basement or recreation room, but you know what I mean. They say that many a truth is spoken in jest, and I do not think that applies more appropriately anywhere than it does to wedding speaches. For example, if the groom has a little bit of a bad habit like he drives his car too fast and maybe picked up a speeding ticket, you could make a little joke in the best man speech about being careful when they drive out on their honeymoon that they don’t get pulled over by the highway patrol, or something like that. Just as long as your humor is well intentioned and not too mean. But if you are the best man you are going to be great friends with groom who may even be your buddy years from now even if the marriage itself doesn’t survive. But that’s not a subject for wedding planners is it?

Another thing that you may be thinking about are telling mother-in-law jokes. This is something that you really need to think about when you are sober and not late at night, if you follow my drift. As a matter of fact, whether you are going to be delivering the best man speech or a toast to the bride and groom, or whatever at the wedding reception, my advice would be not to go it alone. Take advantage of some of the professional help that is available. Because that is what I eventually did, and I am not in the least bit sorry. Because the best man speech I finally gave really put every one of the wedding guests at ease and helped the occasion to be as close to perfection as you can get these days.

Planning My Best Man Wedding Speech

I was so happy for my best friend when he told me he wanted me to be the best man at his wedding that at first I didn’t realize I would have to be giving a speech. Marv and I have been in a band for nearly three years – he plays rhythm guitar and I’m the drummer. I like to sit back in the corner most of the time, and work on the technical stuff, which has nothing to do with writing lyrics and singing in front of an audience. So it took a while before I realized Marv and Millie wanted me to write the best man speech and stand up at the wedding reception and deliver it to all of the family and friends. May, that totally made me nervous!

Of course, I put off even thinking about writing the speech until the wedding was only about a week away and Marv kept asking me if I was done yet. That’s when I figured I had best knuckle down and start thinking about what I was going to write. And so my first advice to any guy who is going to be a best man is to take on the responsibility like a man and get it done sooner rather than putting it off until later. The reason for this is because after you get it finished you can relax and stop worrying about the thing, unlike me who worried instead of just getting it done.

There are different kinds of best man speaches just like there are different types of bride and grooms. Most people think of me as a quiet, nerdy guy who’s good with computers, so I figured I would surprise those folks by delivering a best man speech that was funny, had a couple of jokes, but was also sincere and inspirational, because that is how weddings should be, as far as I am concerned.

The more I thought about the bride and groom — Marv and Millie — and their relationship with each other as well as how they and I get along, the more I realized that a wedding was simply a progression of life as it flows through time. I remembered little things about the bride and groom to be and started writing down little notes about some of the moments they told me about and some incidents we shared together. That was a pretty good inspiration for me to get going in writing that best man speech. At least I felt like I was off to a fairly decent start.
